Sports Facilities in 60 Northwest Cities, Ranked (2026)

Away Game tracks 4,940 sports facilities — parks, fields, courts, complexes, pools, and gyms — across Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Nevada, with 12,861 individually mapped and verified playing fields. This study ranks every city where we track 15 or more facilities by how many places there are to play, per 10,000 residents.

Key findings

Winnemucca, NV leads the Northwest with 54.7 tracked facilities per 10,000 residents (45 facilities, population 8,225).
Small towns and college towns dominate per capita — Moscow, ID (home of the University of Idaho), Ellensburg, WA (Central Washington University), and Pullman, WA (Washington State) all rank far above the region’s biggest cities, while Portland and Las Vegas lead on raw facility totals.
Portland has the region’s most individually mapped playing fields (2,535 verified field and court boundaries).
Among densely mapped cities, Portland, OR has the most lighted fields for evening play (316 verified lit fields).

Methodology

Facility counts are a 2026-08-01 snapshot of the Away Game database: approved, operational sports facilities in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Nevada, compiled from OpenStreetMap, Google Places, official parks and recreation sources, and community contributions, then reviewed by Away Game. Only cities with 15 or more tracked facilities are ranked. “Verified fields” are individual field and court boundaries drawn on satellite imagery and human-verified. Lighting counts reflect recorded data and may undercount cities with sparser coverage — the lighted-fields table is therefore limited to densely mapped cities.
